We discovered this remarkable building in 2004. Formerly known as Shaftesbury House, it had served as a lodging house for around 500 seasonal workers in the area.
Built in 1938 and part of the modernist era, the building used methods of construction and modern housing concepts considered revolutionary at the time, which improved the standards of living for thousands of people during its time as a hostel.
With this legacy, it seemed fitting to make it a part of Greenhouse: a project which offers an enhanced way to live and work and is one of the UK´s most pioneering and challenging sustainable developments.
